Physical Activity
You spend a certain amount of time training for your race, or running to get in shape. What makes up most of your day is... everything else. Your physical activity during the day isn't something to be trifled with. What you do during the rest of the time you're awake can be used to support your goals. You don't need to go to the gym 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours at night to become fit. All you need is a healthy lifestyle that supports you.
Change things up. Start walking up and down stairs instead of riding the escalator or elevator, walk to the store or ride a bicycle if it's not too far. Go to the park with your family or friends and just have fun. Go outside your house and do something exciting. Change your work station from sitting at work to standing at work. The little things you do becomes a building block for what you become. There's more than a couple ways to make your day more productive. It's also nice to have other people that have similar goals. When you have friends that work with you towards your goals, it makes life easier. Hang out with those friends that are active, and being active isn't too hard. In fact, it becomes really easy.
Here's a few things I do to insure my lifestyle matches my goals:
Stand at work... and at home! I raised my desk so that I have to stand to get on the computer. It's just a little difference.
Stop slouching. Slouching promotes bad posture. How you stand, sit, sleep, all impact your running.
Cook your own food! Cooking means a lot to me; it makes me 'work' while having fun, and it also encourages me to eat healthy.
Play sports with family and friends! Every Wednesday night, I go play floor hockey, and I also take part in wallyball, indoor soccer... but make sure that when you do play sports, you only work as hard as you're able. Don't be a hero and overwork yourself to where you get injured.
Go hiking! It's an awesome way to work and also a time where you can go solo and have some alone time, or with company and get some social time.
Explore! Sometimes, we forget what's outside, so go out and get to know more about where you live, the cities you're near, or that mall you've heard about but never thought to try. Go somewhere new and check that off of your 'Things to do' List.
